Burp Castle

41 East 7th Street
Manhattan

Want some great, unique beers but are tired of loud bars? Try the Burp Castle, which has a medieval monk theme. This East Village bar claim to be operated by “Brewist Monks since 1022 AD.” They offer some amazing Belgian and microbrew craft beers on tap. The idea of a vow of silence may be a gimmick, but the bartenders will actually shush patrons if they are too loud and obnoxious. This means that it is a great place to have some delicious beer and a conversation you can actually hear.

Fraunces Tavern

54 Pearl Street
Manhattan

Want to hang out in Manhattan’s oldest building, and have a drink or dinner? Fraunces Tavern was built in 1719! The tavern played a role in the American Revolution, and George Washington was there. As important, it’s a working tavern, with over 200 whiskeys and 130 craft beers and ciders. The restaurant menu is full and features great dishes as well. The building has been preserved and reconstructed, and has a museum. Rooms can be reserved for private parties.

McSorley’s Old Ale House

15 East 7th Street
Manhattan
www.mcsorleysnewyork.com

There’s some debate about when McSorley’s opened (they claim its 1854). But what’s clear is that this historic pub is easily one of the most historic in New York. There’s sawdust on the floor, and old newspapers on the floor. They only admitted women to the bar when they were forced to in the 1970s. Its cash only, and they serve two types of beer – light and dark.

The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden

29-19 24th Avenue
Astoria, Queens
http://bohemianhall.com

This beer garden is old-school Astoria at its best. Over a hundred years old, this beer garden is huge and historic. It is a nice outdoor venue day or night, with great beer and Czech food. You get goulash, klobasa, schnitzel, and many other authentic Eastern European food. Mugs and pitchers of European beer or cider are on draft and quite reasonably priced.
